MANILA (UPDATED) — A closed van accidentally fell on its side pinning a man and a woman on board a bicycle in a freak accident in Pasig City on Tuesday.

“Ang bad news may namatay. Ang nangyari po dito yung isang closed van ay tumaob mag-isa. Unfortunately, may naipit na dalawang nasa sidewalk,” according to Thomas Orbos, chairman of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

The victims, Ernesto Abuel and daughter Deborah, were rushed to the hospital, but the father was declared dead on arrival at Medical City.

At the time of the accident, which happened along C5 Road in Barangay Ugong, Ernesto was bringing his daughter to the grocery store where she works.

“Nakita namin na natauban ng van yung mag-ama, nasa ilalim. Yung babae nakalabas ang ulo, yung tatay, nadaganan. Yung babae may malaking sugat sa ulo. Yung ama unconscious,” said Senior Inspector Cid Cariaga of the Philippine National Police Highway Patrol Group.

The van's driver, Wilfredo Rafols, surrendered to authorities. He said he was trying to avoid a car but lost control of the steering wheel, causing the truck to lose its balance.

The van, owned by Adsia Logistics Inc., was heading to Quezon City to deliver grocery items.
