Local authorities in Cebu are planning to implement a signal blackout on cellphones during the solemn procession of the Sto. Niño and the Sinulog grand parade this weekend.

Police and military officials met yesterday at the Cebu City Police Office together with city officials and representatives of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC).

The security of the public during the solemn procession this Saturday and the Sinulog grand parade on Sunday was the agenda.

Authorities are not discounting the possibility of a possible terror attack during the festivities like what occurred in Hilongos, Leyte.

NTC-7 Regional Director Jess Laureno revealed that the request of the Philippine National Police (PNP) for a signal jamming during the two big events is awaiting approval from the office of the NTC Commissioner.

Laureno said they will inform the public on what to do in case the signal jamming of communications equipment is implemented.

Laureno said there will be no cellphone signals when the signal jamming starts.

Councilor Dave Tumulak said they have talked to the three giant telcos and they are supportive of the plan.

Meanwhile, the Mandaue City Police Office said they are ready for the 'traslacion' of the Sto. Niño tomorrow, Friday.

The Sto. Niño will be brought to the St. Joseph Parish in Mandaue, where it will stay overnight for the fluvial procession on Saturday.
