DAVAO CITY - Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte is seeking for more understanding after he was caught violating one of the city’s traffic rules.

Duterte was apprehended earlier this month for violating Davao City’s Executive Order 39, which imposes speed limits in certain areas in Davao.

Paolo, son of President-elect Rodrigo Duterte, noted that he only committed a minor violation but nonetheless sought understanding from the public.

“Okay lang naman kapag may violation na mahuli. Bakit mo pa kalabanin ang mga nagta-trabahong traffic enforcers,” he told reporters here after his oath taking.

“Hindi naman major violation iyon. Overspeeding lang yun... Tao lang tayo. Hindi maiwasan kung magkamali ka talaga,” he added.

Davao City Transport and Traffic Management Office chief Rhodelio Poliquit earlier told ABS-CBN News that Duterte was driving at a speed of about 55 kilometers per hour in area where a 40 kph speed limit is being enforced.

The vice mayor was slapped with a P2,078 fine, and was given three days from the confiscation of his license to settle his traffic violation at the local Land Transportation Office.

This is not the first time a member of the Duterte family has been flagged down in their stronghold for a traffic violation.

Poliquit said Sara Duterte was also issued a speeding ticket in 2014, while the president-elect was apprehended in 2009 for not wearing a helmet while driving his motorcycle.

On Monday, Paolo took his oath of office as vice-mayor elect before Judge Rufino Ferraris in Davao City.
