MANILA (2nd UPDATE) - Two people were injured after a tower crane of a private construction site collapsed and fell on passing vehicles along Dela Costa Street in Makati City Thursday.

A policeman told DZMM that the accident was reported to the barangay before 8 a.m.

The crane toppled concrete electric posts before falling onto two passing vehicles, including a taxi.

The injured, a cabbie and a cyclist whose names were not disclosed by police, were brought to a hospital.

Witness Joana Marie Labor, who was riding a van near the area when the crane fell, said she saw the cabbie get out of the vehicle before the electric pole hit his taxi. She and other witnesses also saw a weak explosion when the electric pole collapsed.

"Papasok kami nu'n," she added. "Nabagsakan din ng wire 'yung sasakyan namin."

Labor said that she and two other colleagues were able to get out of the van immediately, but it took an hour or so before authorities cleared their vehicle of the fallen electric wires.

A.M. Oreta Construction said that the crane collapsed while it was being set up.

"Around 7:50 a.m., a crane being set up in our site along H.V. de la Costa St, Makati collapsed," the company said. "The collapsed crane affected electric posts, high tensions wires, a taxi, parked car. "

The reason why the crane collapse is still under investigation, and A.M. Oreta Construction said they are already coordinating with the authorities.

"We are currently conducting our own investigation on the cause of the collapse. We are cooperating with authorities," it said. "We would like to apologize to those affected by this (collapsed crane) accident."
