President Rodrigo Duterte always chose comfort over style, befitting his laid-back personality, his tailor revealed Thursday.

Hermie Balagon, who has been doing Duterte's barongs and formal wear for 13 years now, said Duterte was not too concerned about the design of his inaugural wear but had been specific about comfort.

"Ayaw niya yung makati; gusto niya yung kumportable. Ang ginamit natin, yung piña-jusi kasi walang lining yun. Mainit kasi pag may lining," Hermie Balagon told Mornings@ANC Thursday.

Duterte wore a Barong Tagalog paired with corduroy pants as he was sworn in as the Philippines' 16th president.

Balagon said they also used their topnotch buttons and gave importance to the way it fits Duterte.

Duterte's favorite haberdashery, Chardin, prepared several Barong Tagalog, and it was Duterte who ultimately chose what he will wear to the inauguration in Malacañang.

Balagon, Chardin's "master cutter," describes the mayor as very sociable and compassionate to the poor.

"Sa tagal naming pagkakakilala kasi ni mayor, ay magaling siya talaga—magaling makisama at saka matutulungin sa mahihirap," he said.

Though their interaction is limited to transactions, he recalled developing closeness with Duterte because of the latter's easy-going persona and their shared roots.

"Madalas kasi kami magkita lang sa patahian sa Chardin at saka sa munisipyo. Nagkakilala kasi kami pareho kaming taga-Leyte, kaya naging close kasi magaling naman siya makisama," Balagon said.

He said people who may have not known the former Davao mayor may also misinterpret the now-president's jokes.

"Palabiro talaga yan. Palabiro talaga ‘yang President. Pag di mo kabisado ‘yan, maninibago ka talaga," he said.
