MANILA - The University of the Philippines (UP) is back on the list of top 400 universities, according to London-based Quacquarelli Symonds (QS)'s annual rankings released on Tuesday.

UP placed 374th this year, up from within the 401-401 bracket last year, making it the only Philippine institution in the top 400.

Three other Philippine universities made it on this year's list: Ateneo de Manila University (501-550); De La Salle University (701+) and University of Santo Tomas (701+).

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) retained its spot as the top-ranked university on the list for the fifth consecutive year, followed by Stanford University and Harvard University.

QS analyzed 10.3 million research papers and 66.3 million citations, indexed by Elsevier's Scopus database. More than 3,800 institutions were considered for inclusion and 916 were ranked.
