MASBATE CITY -- The streets of Masbate City resembled a scene from a “Wild Wild West” movie with parade participants and spectators alike dressed in checkered long sleeved shirts, jeans, boots and Western-style cowboy hats.

Visitors from all over the country flocked to the Provincial Capitol of Masbate to witness the grand opening of the Rodeo Masbateño 2018.

Now on its 25th year, Rodeo Masbateño is one of the most unique festivals in the country, with locals portraying the local cowboy culture and highlighting the best of Masbateño culture.

Home to vast cattle ranches, the province of Masbate situated just off the Bicol mainland, is well-known as the country’s “Rodeo Capital.”

Highlights of the week-long event included the Festival of Festivals, a Grand Parade and unusual parlor games testing participant’s skills in cattle lasooing on horseback, cattle wrestling, bull whipping, carambola, bull riding and Bronco riding, to name a few.

A grand cattle drive was held where scores of cows were let loose on the streets similar to the popular Bull Run of the San Fermin Fest in Pamplona, Spain. Cattle were also up for grabs in raffle draws.

Side events included a trade fair, livestock display and auction, street barn dance, photo competition of Masbate’s sights and sounds, and the search for the Miss Rodeo Cowgirl.

A beef cooking competition was also held to test the culinary skills of participating chefs.
