President Rodrigo Duterte now has another unique pair of footwear he can alternate with his Marikina-made leather shoes--a pair of brown sneakers made of processed pineapple leaves.
The shoes were given to Duterte by Spanish fashion designer Carmen Hijosa, who also "developed a technology which processed decorticated pineapple fiber into an organic leather product which she called Piñatex," Agriculture secretary Emmanuel Piñol said.
International brands have been using the plant-based leather to manufacture shoes, car seats, and furniture.
Hijosa intends to source more raw materials from pineapple-producing provinces in the Philippines as the demand for Piñatex continues to rise, Piñol said.
The government gave equipment to farmers from Camarines Norte, South Cotabato, and Bukidnon to produce pineapple fiber in hopes that the country can become one of the biggest producers of the unique "leather" made out of pineapple leaves, the agriculture chief said.
