Kapunan was reacting to a statement made by another Senate hopeful, Susan Ople, who suggested an expansion of the current annulment law instead of allowing divorce in the Philippines.

"I think when you say the word divorce, there's a stigma attached to it, in our culture. I think I'm in favor of looking at it the Filipino perspective, looking at how even when you grant an annulment and broaden the reason for granting so, you can keep the children safe and secure; yung Filipino values paano mo maipasok doon," said Ople.
