MANILA - During Sunday's presidential debate, Vice President Jejomar Binay likened fellow presidential candidate Mar Roxas to Joseph Goebbels, who was a politician and close associate of Germany's Adolf Hitler.

But who exactly was Goebbels? An article on history.com describes Goebbels as a trusted friend and colleague of Hitler, who appointed him to the position of minister for public enlightenment and propaganda.

As Hitler's propagandist, Goebbel was responsible for presenting Hitler in a positive light. He also controlled the media, producing propaganda films and other projects, all while instigating anti-Semitism.

Goebbels is well known for his belief that the "truth is the greatest enemy of the State," as well as telling a "big lie" repeatedly will lead people to eventually believe it.

An article on the Jewish Virtual Library noted Goebbels "had his six children poisoned with a lethal injection by an SS doctor and then himself and his wife Magda shot by an SS orderly on May 1, 1945."

During the second leg of the PiliPinas Debates at the University of the Philippines Visayas in Cebu, Binay accused Roxas of being a disciple of Goebbels. This, after Roxas pointed out that the Commission on Audit found irregularities in the construction of the Makati City Hall Building 2.

"Kung ikaw, magsalita, magnanakaw, nasa bintang lang kung ano. Alam mo ikaw, Mr. Roxas, ikaw eh talagang, disipulo ka ni Goebbels. 'Yun bang 1,000 lies ultimately eh, maniniwala ang tao na totoo. Ikaw 'yun, ang disipulo nun," he said, following Roxas' comment on Binay's alleged corruption.

"Kilala po ninyo si Goebbels dahil binabasa po niyo siya at sinusunod po niyo siya. Hindi ko po kilala 'yan," Roxas replied.
