Cover artist advances to 'Tawag' semis on second try

MANILA -- If at first you don't succeed, try again.

That's exactly what YouTube cover artist Sam Mangubat did -- and he is now moving to semifinals of "Tawag ng Tanghalan."

On Thursday, Mangubat secured his fifth straight win with his cover of Robbie Williams' "Angels."

The Batangas native impressed the judges with his smooth performance, receiving a total score of 93.4 percent. He defeated daily winner Ricca Casipong, who got 90.4 for her rendition of "How Could You Say You Love Me" by Sarah Geronimo.

Mangubat first joined in August and fell one win short of a spot in the semifinals of the singing contest.

Mangubat has already won P135,000 and will return to "It's Showtime" on Friday to defend his belt.
