Paolo Santos, best remembered for his acoustic rendition of “Moonlight Over Paris,” returned to limelight Friday as he joined the celebrity edition of Tawag ng Tanghalan.

Now 44 and a family man with three children, the singer-songwriter was one of four celebrity contenders who took the “It’s Showtime” stage, alongside Apple Chiu, Jojo Abellana, and Tuesday Vargas.

“Hanggang ngayon, gumagawa ako ng kanta. Iyan po ang pinagkakaabalahan ko ngayon. Music has always been my life,” he said in his pre-performance reel.

Santos, once dubbed the “King of Acoustic” who helped popularize the genre in the local music scene, departed from his roots with a decidedly upbeat performance of Michael Jackson’s “Rock With You.”

“I’ve never been nervous after a long, long time,” he said after his number. “Ito na yata ‘yung, in the last 10 years, pinaka nakakatakot!”

While Santos earned praise from judges, including “Punong Hurado” Dulce, he failed to clinch the champion title for the day. That distinction went to Chiu, who will face off with other celebrity winners of Tawag ng Tanghalan to be named grand champion.
