MANILA -- After 22 years as one of the top stars of ABS-CBN, Kris Aquino has decided to leave the network as she is set to do a TV project with APT Entertainment, Inc., which is closely associated with rival GMA-7.
Aquino announced this on Monday in a series of posts in her Instagram page.
Part 1: I want to tell you our truth & I pray you'll understand... 20 years ago, I went back to ABS CBN after a year w/ GMA (Star Talk & a Viva produced afternoon talk show). It started w/ Today w/ Kris Aquino & ended w/ Kris Tv. We had a memorable, excellent run. ABS saw me through my worst & my best. I had the chance to be part of career defining shows like TWKA, The Buzz, Game KNB, Deal or No Deal, PGT etc & had iconic movies like Feng Shui & Sukob. We were set to renew our contract February 2016, it was a generous, less demanding agreement but at that time there was a threat to my life we needed to take seriously, I had to regain my health, and I needed time for my family & me. We didn't sign then, I went to Hawaii, came back to campaign, then left again. Our agreement was we'd talk when I got back. That is the risk of taking time for yourself- when you come back there's no guarantee that a space will be held for you. We spoke in July but there was no definite show & no assured time frame of my return on air. I perfectly understood- as much as I wanted to believe I was a pillar of the network, everybody is dispensable. And I say that with no bitterness- just HONESTY. So to all of you saying please don't leave- it wasn't a choice that was just mine to make. I take my share of the responsibility. And I say that w/ so much gratitude in my heart. ❤️
Aquino confirmed she had a meeting with Kapamilya network last July but said that "there was no definite show and no assured time frame of my return on air."
"I perfectly understood- as much as I wanted to believe I was a pillar of the network, everybody is dispensable. And I say that with no bitterness- just HONESTY. So to all of you saying please don't leave- it wasn't a choice that was just mine to make. I take my share of the responsibility. And I say that with so much gratitude in my heart," Aquino wrote.
The television host said it was her manager Boy Abunda who reached out to APT's Mr. Tony Tuviera.
"Our plan was initially just a digital initiative- I know you miss my #foodtrips & my #cooking #recipes #roadtrips & #travel... But maybe my guardian angel in heaven (could it have been you, Mom?) was working overtime & what was an attempt at something new & experimental, evolved into a vision & a presentation that felt perfect for who I am now & for our TV collaboration," Aquino shared.
Aquino expressed gratitude to ABS-CBN and her new "family."
"This is the 1st & last I shall say about this chapter of my life. You deserved the true story & I gave you my truth, so that we may all move forward... So here's a shoutout of THANK YOU to the Kapamilya Network ABS-CBN for all that was, and here's a shoutout of THANK YOU to my new APT family for all that will be. And most of all my THANK YOU to all of you for allowing me to just be me," Aquino ended.
Just last month, Aquino mentioned on Instagram that she was meeting with ABS-CBN to discuss her "return to TV" after taking a break due to health problems.
However, after two weeks, Aquino posted a photo of her meeting with APT bosses Tony Tuviera and Mike Tuviera.
APT stands for Antonio P. Tuviera, and is a subsidiary of TAPE Inc., the producer of "Eat Bulaga," among other shows.
Aquino's morning show on ABS-CBN, "Kris TV," aired its final episode on March 23 after she decided to take a break from show business because of health problems.
"Alam nating lahat na mahirap umalis at mahirap asahan na makakabalik ka at the same level you were nung umalis ka. Pero naramdaman ko naman siguro namuhunan na ako. Twenty years na from October 28, 1996 nung nag-start na araw-araw, all the way to March 26, 2016. It would have been a total 10,354 days working and being here with you in ABS-CBN," Aquino said as she bade goodbye to "Kris TV" viewers.
But throughout her break, she has consistently vowed to return to TV again.
Aquino hosted her solo talk show "Today With Kris Aquino" on ABS-CBN in 1996.
She also hosted "Morning Girls With Kris and Korina" with veteran broadcaster Korina Sanchez and "Boy & Kris" with friend Boy Abunda.
Aquino was also one of the original hosts of the entertainment shows "The Buzz" and "Showbiz News Ngayon," both with Abunda, which helped earn her the title of "Queen of All Media."
At one point, she was also dubbed the "Queen of Game Shows" as she hosted "The Price Is Right," "Pilipinas Game KNB," "Kapamilya Deal Or No Deal" and "Wheel of Fortune."
She was also one of the hosts of the noontime variety show "Pilipinas Win Na Win" with Mariel Rodriguez and Robin Padilla, and was one of the original judges on "Pilipinas Got Talent."
Aside from hosting, Aquino also acted on teleseryes like "Hiram," "Kung Tayo'y Magkakalayo," and "Kailangan Ko'y Ikaw."
