MANILA — Jasmin Basar, or DJ Jasmin to long-time listeners of MOR 101.9, has passed away, the radio station which she considered family for over a decade announced on Tuesday.

“Salamat, Jasmin. Mahal ka namin,” was the brief statement of MOR 101.9, with a black-and-white photo of DJ Jasmin, who had been battling chronic kidney disease.

DJ Jasmin is best remembered for her eponymous radio program “Dear Jasmin,” and later “Dear MOR,” where she gave love advice to letter senders.

It was also on MOR 101.9 where she first shared with followers, in February 2018, that she had been grappling with her illness.

DJ Jasmin had been undergoing dialysis as recently as February this year, and had been seeking a match for a kidney transplant. At the time, she would still go on air via phone patch from her home.

“Bakit ako? Sa dinadami ng tao sa mundo na masasama, why me? Gano’n ka ba kabilib sa akin, Lord, sa powers ko, at iyon agad ang binigay mong pagsubok, agad-agad?

“I always put in mind, everything will be alright in the end, that I will be able to get back to my old life, and make it a better one,” she said in an interview on “Rated K” that aired in February.

A Mass Communication graduate from Far Eastern University, DJ Jasmin was a writer for television before she clinched the decade-long stint as one of the disc jockeys of ABS-CBN’s flagship radio station.

She is survived by her parents and four siblings, who credited her for helping raise them and send them to school.

DJ Jasmin’s colleagues, meanwhile, paid tribute to her online. Among them were DJ Chacha and DJ Popoy, her partner in the program “Dear MOR.”

“Sa ganitong itsura mo gusto kitang maalala. Masaya at malakas,” DJ Chacha wrote, describing photos she shared on Facebook.

DJ Popoy, meanwhile, said: “Mami-miss kita, Manang Jasmin ko. Kuwentuhan, asaran, payuhan na pang sa ating dalawa lang. Tunay kang kaibigan, Kasmin. Magpahinga ka na. Gabayan mo kami. Goodbye, partner. I love you.”

In an October 2018 interview, DJ Popoy and DJ Jasmin opened up about their friendship and radio tandem, with the latter saying that, if it happens that her health condition would result in her longer-term absences, she would be perfectly content with leaving her program to her partner.

“Kapag madalas akong absent, siya ang sumasalo sa akin. We’re supposed to be a tandem. Pero I am glad na I have a very dependable partner. Kasi for the longest time, ako ang humawak ng ‘Dear MOR.’ So nagpapasalamat ako sa kanya, kasi ngayon ko lang talaga na-feel na puwede kong maiwan ‘yung programa anytime… Ngayon kampante na ako, na maiiwan ko ‘yung programa sa kanya.”

In her Instagram Stories, Cynthia expressed how excited she is for the upcoming musical.

“Just a little busy this Summer. Can’t wait,” she wrote.

According to the website of Hollywood Bowl, Jesus Christ Superstar is a “timeless work that explores the biblical portrayal of the extraordinary events that led to the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ as seen through the eyes of his betrayer, Judas Iscariot.”

The production will run from August 1 to 3 at the Hollywood Bowl. This isn’t the first time that Cynthia took on a role in the said musical as she previously portrayed Mary Magdalene in the 2020 version of the hit musical.

Fans expressed their excitement in the comment section after learning the news. Some of the fans of the award-winning actress shared how they can’t wait for Cynthia’s version of Jesus in the musical.

“Cynthia Erivo as Jesus Christ! SOLD!!,” a fan wrote.

“Jesus is a black queer woman and you've gotta deal with it!! IM SOOOOOOO HAPPY,” another fan added.

Meanwhile, other religious netizens expressed their dismay after the announcement as they believed it is a mockery of their religion.
