MANILA -- Veteran actress Vivian Velez has launched a fundraising campaign for former character actor Dick Israel, whose house in Caloocan was razed by fire.

Velez and Israel worked together in classic films such as "Sa Nag aapoy Na Dagat," "Escolta: Mayo 13...Biyernes ng Hapon," and "Gameng."

In a Facebook post, Velez said the 57-year-old actor suffered a stroke in 2010, which paralyzed half of his body. His wheelchair was destroyed by the fire that struck his home.

Photos of Israel's plight have made the rounds online.

Israel has been recognized for his acting by local award-giving bodies.

He was awarded Best Supporting Actor in 1988 for his role in "Patrolman" at the Metro Manila Film Festival, and in 1995 for his portrayal in "Kanto Boy 2: Anak ni Totoy Guapo" at the FAMAS Awards, among others.

He is best known for taking on villain roles on the big and small screens.

Damay Kamay, an organization founded by artists to provide assistance to their needy colleagues in the entertainment industry, is coordinating the fundraising campaign.

Cash donations can be deposited at Security Bank's Tomas Morato branch, under the checking account number 5318 2600 0275 006. Goods can be dropped off at 7A Sta. Elvira St. Brgy. Kapitolyo, Pasig City.
