When Charice introduced his new name, the burning question on many people's minds was: Why Jake Zyrus?

In an exclusive interview with ABS-CBN News' MJ Felipe on Thursday, the singer elaborated on his choice. And as it turns out, the process was a lot simpler than what everyone had assumed.

"Actually napakadaling proseso ang nangyari," he acknowledged, before explaining that the search began in front of a mirror.

"Nagbabanggit lang ako ng names. Tapos noong nabanggit ko iyong Jake, parang may kurot sa puso mo na parang ito iyong gusto ko para sa akin. Tapos Zyrus kasi naisip ko na ayaw ko na isa lang iyong name ko, gusto ko dalawa."

It was back on June 20 when Jake Zyrus introduced himself to the world. And while his decision received mostly positive feedback from his fans, it earned him condemnation from his grandmother.

Asked about his lola's rather violent reaction, Zyrus pleaded for understanding. "Don't play fire with fire . . . Give her a couple of days. We just have to get used to it. Like my mom, sa interview niya, nagulat siya pero she always tells me that she's there for me."

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

Zyrus likened coming out with his new name to being "reborn." Saying that he feels more confident nowadays, he shared: "Para sa akin kasi, para kang pinanganak ulit. And this time, you want to make it right. I just wanted to make it right."

Zyrus stressed, however, that he has yet to have his name legally changed.

In the same interview, he also talked about the possibility of undergoing sex-reassignment surgery. He said that he is carefully thinking about it but has acknowledged taking testosterone-hormone therapy. "It's getting deeper," he said of the changes to his voice.

According to Zyrus, he is back in the studio working on new material. He apologized for those wanting to hear Charice, and added that he is excited for his future.

Imagining holding a concert as Jake Zyrus, he said: "Performing onstage with that name and everyone calling me either Jake or Zyrus or Jay Z, whatever they want. Sabi ko, 'Wow.' Parang sobrang nakiliti iyong puso ko."
