'Black Panther' rules PH cinemas with P258.57M in 5 days

MANILA – Marvel Studios' "Black Panther" debuted strong in the Philippines, earning P258.57 million in five days.

The movie is said to have surpassed the opening weekends of recent Marvel Studios titles like "Guardians of The Galaxy," "Ant-Man," "Doctor Strange," "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," and "Thor: Ragnarok."

Among the cinemas which posted high grosses are Trinoma (P5.41 million), SM Cebu (P4.91 million), Uptown Place (P4.47 million), Glorietta 4 (P4.35 million), Power Plant (P4 million), Greenbelt 3 (P3.86 million), and SM Clark (P3.75 million).

Also included in the top 20 theaters are SM Aura (P3.64 million), Greenhills Promenade (P3.58 million), Fisher Mall (P3.55 million), Alabang Town Center (P3.52 million), Ayala Malls Cebu (P3.43 million), SM Southmall (P3.42 million), U.P. Town Center (P3.39 million), SM Seaside City Cebu (P3.36 million), Gateway Cineplex (P3.25 million) and Robinsons Magnolia (P3.22 million).

An official synopsis for the Marvel Studios movie reads: "'Black Panther' follows T'Challa who, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king.

"But when a powerful old enemy reappears, T'Challa's mettle as king—and Black Panther—is tested when he is drawn into a formidable conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk.

"Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people and their way of life."

The film stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis.

Directed by Ryan Coogler, the movie was released in the Philippines on February 14.
