MANILA - Filipino workers are less happy and less optimistic about their jobs this year compared to last year, a survey from a job website said.

The job happiness index dropped to 4.97 this year, from 5.25 in 2016 while job optimism fell to 4.98 from 6.15 during the same comparable period, according to the Jobstreet.com study

While it did not specify the cause for the decline, Jobstreet.com said relationships with colleagues, work location, and company reputation make workers happy while job security, work culture, and the management style of bosses make them unhappy, JobStreet.com country manager Philip Gioca told reporters.

Out of 9,326 respondents polled from July 31 to Aug 31, 33 percent said a salary increase would make them happy at work while 23 percent answered finding a new job.

"This is a wake up call to them (employers)... to retain them employees, you need to give them raises and bonuses," Gioca said

Workers in the hotel, food and beverage industries, as well as those working in government are the happiest this year.

"Mas masaya yung mga nasa hotel kasi (Those who work in hotels are happy because) they also enjoy other perks such as tips. They are also expected to exude happiness when in front of customers," Gioca said.

Among 7 countries surveyed, the Philippines is the third country with the happiest employees. Indonesia's job happiness index is at 5.27, followed by Vietnam with 5.19.

Workers from Malaysia (4.65), Thailand (4.55), Hong Kong (4.45), and Singapore (4.31) lag behind the Philippines in terms of job happiness and optimism.
