MANILA—The Southeast Asia head of Xiaomi said the Chinese tech firm wants to be known more as an Internet company instead of just a smartphone maker.

John Chen told ANC's "Future Perfect" that as the company builds more smart devices, it is also building an "Internet of things' (IoT).

Chen said Xiaomi is in talks with Globe and Smart about its IoT strategy and that the company's sights are set beyond the smartphone, which sets it apart from other firms such as Oppo and Vivo.

"We respect other players in the market, but we see ourselves as our competitor," Chen said, adding that Xiaomi wants to surpass its own performance every month.

Xiaomi is also eyeing to partner with Google or Microsoft to develop an English version of its Xiao AI smart-home assistant.
