MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday promised to provide free Wi-Fi services in selected public areas nationwide as he ordered the drafting of a national broadband plan.

Duterte said the free Wi-Fi access will be provided in parks, plazas, public libraries, government hospitals, schools, airports, and seaports.

“Happy lahat,” he said in his first State of the Nation Address.

Former President Gloria Arroyo had attempted to set up a national broadband infrastructure with China's ZTE Corp. but this was scrapped following allegations of corruption.
