PUERTO PRINCESA CITY - The Department of Environment and Natural Resources has filed a criminal complaint against Ipilan Nickel Corp, accusing the company of violating its tree-cutting permit.
The company cleared a 1.7-hectare tract of land that was "outside" what was permitted by authorities, said Natividad Bernandino, DENR regional director for Mimaropa.
Former environment secretary Gina Lopez cancelled the company's environmental compliance certificate last December, effectively rendering the tree-cutting permit invalid.
The tree-cutting authority was issued in May 2016 as part of Ipilan Nickel's Mineral Production Sharing Agreement.
Brooke's Point Mayor Jean Feliciano filed a separate complaint for obstruction of justice.
