MANILA - The formation of a “super body” against illegal drugs has been proposed in Congress to boost President Rodrigo Duterte’s relentless campaign, its lead proponent said Saturday.

The police, prosecution, prevention and rehabilitation components of the drive will be “controlled and supervised” by the Presidential Anti-Drug Authority, which will be under Duterte’s office, said Sen. Vicente “Tito” Sotto III.

“With the President now, na very keen about this, bagay na bagay ito na magkaroon ng super body,” Sotto told DZMM.

Under the current set-up, the government’s ant-drug agencies operate separately. The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, for example, has anti-narcotics agents separate from the police.

“There must be a combination, a holistic approach,” Sotto said.

Sotto said he was confident his bill creating the “super body” would be passed in the Senate and he was looking for counterpart legislation in the House of Representatives.

Duterte reiterated his tough stand against drugs on Friday, adding there would be “zero tolerance” for policemen who were in cahoots with criminal syndicates.
