DAVAO CITY - Several business leaders expressed high hopes that the Philippine economy will further flourish under President-elect Rodrigo Duterte, as the tough-talking executive’s vow to make the Philippines crime-free is expected to encourage investment flow.

Duterte, who won in the election on a platform of peace and order, has vowed to implement nationwide Davao City’s system of responding to crimes and other emergencies.

Business delegates were left impressed after paying a visit to the southern Philippine city’s Central 911 and Public Safety and Security Command Center.

“We’re so impressed…I get to see a lot of operations center around the world and this is impressive, very impressive,” Guillermo Luz, chair of the National Competitiveness Council, told ABS-CBN News.

A nearby command center, meanwhile, houses the monitoring center for the 190 surveillance cameras scattered in the entire city, 173 of which were dedicated for monitoring crimes and accidents and the remaining 17 for traffic management.

A call center is also available to accept calls for help and assistance round the clock.

“For people in general, they want to feel they are safe. That in case of emergency, the government is able to respond quickly,” Luz said.

Peter Wallace of the Wallace Business Forum, meanwhile, said Duterte’s political will help him achieve his goal of eradicating crimes.

“When the president has said he wants crime resolved in 6 months, everybody sort of laughed at him and said it is not possible. Maybe it is not possible, but you’re gonna go a damn long way if you got this nationwide,” Wallace told ABS-CBN News.

“I don’t think anybody doubts that President Duterte has political will. He has shown that already.”
