MANILA - The government may name the new telecommunications company as early as September, the government official overseeing the process to select the challenger to Globe Telecom and PLDT Inc said Thursday.

Up to 4 companies have expressed interest as terms of reference for the selection are being prepared, Department of Information and Communications Technology officer-in-charge Eliseo Rio said.

"The purpose really is to review terms and reference of the selection process, to make sure the new player can really compete with Globe and PLDT," Rio told DZMM.

Rio said he did not want to risk a repeat of a challenger backing out, referring to San Miguel Corp's botched plan to partner with Australia's Telstra.
