China's Dalian insists trains safe to use on MRT

MANILA - The Chinese maker of 48 trains meant for the MRT 3 said Thursday it could prove through additional tests that its vehicles were safe to use in the capitals busiest railway.

The government had not used the Dalian trains one year after they delivered due to questions over their compatibility with the MRT's tracks.

The chairman of CRRC Dlian Co, Min Xing, and its general manager of overseas, Li Depu, faced reporters in Manila for the first time on Thursday. The MRT had operated below target capacity for weeks.

In a test run last month, 4 Dalian trains ran on the MRT tracks for 4 hours. the company's chairman said this proved that the trains were safe to use.

The Dalian executives with Philippine government officials recently to explain their side.

TUV Rheinland, the German firm tapped by the Department of Transportation to determine whether or not the Chinese-made trains made for the MRT-3 were safe to use, has recommended a weighing test for the coaches.
