MANILA - Some 200 commercial establishments in Boracay face closure, authorities said Friday, as they moved to contain human waste contamination in waters of Philippine tourism's crown jewel.

Tourism Sec. Wanda Corazon Teo related one incident where businessmen having dinner in one of the island's restaurants were jolted by an explosion, which turned out to be a busted pipe that leaked feces.

President Rodrigo Duterte earlier this week threatened to shut down Boracay, describing its waters as a "cesspool."

"Now is the time to save Boracay. We should preserve the balance. Let us not compromise the environment for economic gains," Teo said.

Tourism Usec. Katherine De Castro said most of the damage could be found along Bolabog beach, a strip parallel to the island's famous white sand beachfront.

"The Bolabog beach is the one na makikita mo na kulay brown na yung tubig (Bolabog Beach is where you can see that the water has turned brown)," De Castro said.

Teo said some establishments were connected to a drainage system built by the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority specifically to drain rain water out of the island.

On Thursday, Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu said businesses in Boracay would be given 2 months to "clean up" their operations.

"It is bitter pill we have to swallow if we want to save Boracay," Tourism spokesperson Frederick Alegre said.
