A Filipino-American San Diego police officer has died in the line of duty.

Austin Machitar, 30, was killed while responding to a vehicle pursuit on Monday in San Diego’s Clairemont neighborhood.

The suspect, who was fleeing from another officer, collided with Machitar’s patrol car, killing him.

The fleeing suspect, whose name has not been released, also died in the crash.

Machitar’s partner Zack Martinez is currently in critical condition.

"In this time of grief, we honor the memory of a hero who gave everything for our safety. His integrity, dedication and heroism will never be forgotten," the San Diego Police Officers Association said on X [formerly Twitter].

Other vehicles were also struck during the crash, but there were no other injuries.

Condolences have poured in from elected officials including Governor Gavin Newsom and San Diego’s Filipino-American mayor, Todd Gloria.

In a statement, Gloria called Machitar, a five-year SDPD veteran, a hero, and said the city will support both officers' families as they navigate the coming days.
