Defense forces of the U.S., Japan, Australia and the Philippines held a one-day joint maritime exercise in the South China Sea on Sunday (April 7).

The exercise involved communication activities and 'officer of the watch' maneuvers in Manila's exclusive economic zone in the South China Sea.

The activities took place days before a summit between the leaders of Japan, U.S. and the Philippines, which will include a discussion of recent incidents in the South China Sea.

The Philippines and China had several maritime run-ins last month that included the use of water cannon and heated verbal exchanges, triggering concerns about an escalation at sea.
