Kamala Harris or Donald Trump. Who will win the majority vote of Filipino Americans for the next US president come Election Day?

For John Jose, a young Republican voter, he is encouraged by the high turnout of early voters who are choosing Trump.

He noted that traditionally and historically , many Filipino Americans vote for the Democratic candidate.

The high turnout of Filipino Americans for this election shows that people “ are tired of the current economic situation,” he said.

“Mahal na ang bilihin. Karamihan ng Pilipino nagppadala pa rin ng pera sa Pilipinas. ‘Yun ‘yung issues na nakikita ng Filipino Americans…Apektado sa wallets,” he said.

Immigration is also a hot button topic among Filipino Americans, Jose said, especially since many Filipinos entered the US legally.

“Natatakot na ang mga Pilipino na nagdaan sa legal na immigration tapos nakikita nila ‘yung southern border, aba bukas na lang pala, puede na pala magpasok ng lahat. Nasasampal sila, nafi feel nila ay insulted and offended sa mga nangyayari po doon. With those top issues, ‘yun ang nag mo motivate ng karamihan ng mg Filipino American and Asians to turn out for this election,” he said.

For his part, young Democratic voter Gabriel Young noted that only one candidate has made Filipino Americans feel seen “and that is Kamala Harris.”

“President Trump has not acknowledged Filipino Americans at all except for one rally in Nevada where he complimented people in their Filipinianas and barongs. That’s about it. There’s no policy,” Young said.

He also noted Republicans love to talk about inflation, the economy and undocumented immigrants “but the truth of the matter is, across the world, inflation is at an all time high.”

“It is not just us that has inflation but everywhere because of the wars going on and what not,” he said.

Young noted that some Filipinos also entered the US illegally and could be considered illegal aliens.

“A lot of Filipinos were undocumented too…For our kababayan in the U.S, VP Harris is making sure that they are safe and secure in their own home by the policy such as the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals that allows undocumented immigrants too, on their path to citizenship,” he said.

Jose said he expects a peaceful transfer of power whoever wins the presidency, saying Trump has already mentioned that this is his last run for the presidency.

Young, however, said he expects Trump to claim victory no matter what the results show “which could probably lead to more lawsuits challenging election certification like he did in Georgia.”

He said that in downtown Washington DC, “people are preparing for another January 6” event.

Young said that until now, Trump and his allies continue to say that the former president was cheated in the 2020 election.
