MANILA, Philippines – The growing popularity of mixed martial arts (MMA) has spawned a boom in gyms that cater to fighters, MMA hopefuls and even weekend warriors.

One of the top MMA gyms in Asia is located in Baguio City, at the heart of a busy market in the Summer Capital.

Team Lakay Gym reflects its surroundings: gritty, tough, and resilient.

Compared to MMA gyms in other countries, it is a no-frills facility. It does not have the modern equipment or amenities of well-known MMA camps, but the gym has produced champions.

This, according to Fight Nation, is the reason Team Lakay Gym is considered one of the top 10 MMA gyms in Asia.

Team Lakay has four champions in the Universal Reality Combat Champion (URCC), the premier fighting event in the Philippines: Edward Folayang, Kevin Belingon, Honorio Banario, and Roy Docyogen.

Team Lakay coach Mark Sanguiao built the gym in 2003, and he is now considered one of Asia’s best MMA coaches, as he produces fighters who do not know the meaning of quitting.

The team is the top group in the local MMA scene, but their ultimate goal is to be the No. 1 fight team in all of Asia. -- Dateline Philippines, ANC, June 24, 2012.
