MANILA -- Jex de Castro missed out on a semifinals "Tawag ng Tanghalan" berth after he had his 4-day win streak snapped last month. But it appears the singer managed to dust himself off and is now just one win away from being in the same situation that he was in.

De Castro is still the defending champion of the singing contest after three days. He scored the win on Thursday with his cover of Gary Valenciano's religious anthem "Take Me Out of the Dark."

He edged out challenger Stephanie Buena, who sang Sampaguita's "Nosi Balasi," De Castro got 94.4 percent from the judges, defeating Buena who received 92.6 percent.

A Viva Artist according to his Instagram profile, De Castro said he first joined "Tawag ng Tanghalan" to help pay for his younger brother's college tuition. He decided to to try once more following his earlier loss after getting more encouragement from fans and family.
