The Philippines men’s national team is seeing action in consecutive FIBA World Cups for the first time since 1978.

In total, the Filipinos are about to compete in their sixth World Cup, dubbed the FIBA World Championships until the 2010 edition.

They debuted in the competition in 1954 when a team led by Caloy Loyzaga traveled to Brazil and ended up taking the bronze medal.

The Filipinos’ history in the World Cup has been up and down.

After the bronze in 1954 and an 8th-place finish in 1959, the Philippines was suspended in 1963 after, as the original host, Manila denied visas to Eastern bloc countries.

The Filipinos returned to the tournament in 1974, finishing 13th, and hosted in 1978, securing 8th place.

They did not qualify for the Cup again until 2014.

The Philippines begins its 2019 Cup campaign against Italy Saturday.
