MANILA (UPDATED) — Kevin Quiambao's MVP prowess was on full display in De La Salle University's UAAP Season 87 opening game.

The Green Archers superstar scored nine of his 22 total points in the clutch as La Salle stunned National University, 78-75, in their men's basketball tournament clash on Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

Tied at 75 with under 30 seconds left in the game, Quiambao hit and drilled a pull-up three-pointer at the 9.8-second mark to get the win for the defending UAAP champions.

"Doon sa sequence na yun, wala namang instructions. Kumbaga laging ngang sinasabi ni coach, teachers lang sila. Bahala kayo, may freedom kayo gawin kung ano yung gusto nyo," said KQ, who also had eight rebounds and seven assists after seeing 32 minutes of action.

The Taft-based team was even down 71-64 earlier in the fourth, and the 6-foot-6, Muntinlupa native said that the 14-4 run that he spearheaded was a matter of showing that he is now ready to step up as one of the veterans of the rookie-laden DLSU team.

"As one of the veterans na nga dito sa team, kailangan ko lang ipakita na ayoko magpatalo. So, in-encourage ko sila na: 'Kaya natin ito, hindi pa tapos ito.' Good thing na umayon yung sitwasyon sa amin," he added.

Also leading by example was Archers' big man Mike Phillips who was pivotal in DLSU securing their final possession by diving for the loose ball off a Jake Figueroa miss, and he also corralled a number of offensive boards that set up KQ's trey.

He finished with an 11-point, 12-rebound game on top of two assists and a block, while EJ Gollena had 10.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs, despite the early exit of 6-foot-9 FSA Mo Diassana due to an apparent leg injury, were led for the majority of the game thanks to Figueroa's 15 points, five rebounds, and four assists.
