MANILA – The grandfather of double Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo has expressed his desire to reunite with his grandson, following his return to the country on Tuesday.

Rodrigo Frisco told ABS-CBN News on Tuesday that he was waiting for an opportunity to see his grandson after his successful stint in the Paris Olympics.

"Talagang minimithi namin makita siya lalong lalo na kung makakasama pa. Talagang gustong gusto namin dahil matagal na namin siyang hindi nakasama," he said.

(Our wish is really to see him [Carlos] and even spend time with him. We really want to see him because it's been a long time since we were able to be with him.)

Frisco said they were preparing to welcome Yulo on his homecoming.

"Yung mga kaibigan namin gumawa ng mga banner, kung ano-ano ang pinagawa nila. Saka nag prepara din sila ng pagkain para sa amin. Tapos papahiramin kami ng kotse para sasakyan ng pamilya yun," Frisco added.

(Our friends even made banners along with other things. They also prepared food for us. They were also supposed to lend us a car for the family to use.)

Frisco said Yulo's father, Mark Andrew, did not disclose the reason why they could not go to the welcoming ceremonies.

Despite failing to see his grandson, Yulo's grandfather remains proud of what he has achieved. Frisco was the one who brought Yulo to the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex to train for gymnastics.

"Sobrang proud naman kasi napakahirap ng na-achieve niya. Talagang Diyos ko, malalaking bansa ang kinalaban. Hindi ko akalain isang maliit na bansa ang makakatalo sa kanila. Yun sobrang proud para kaming hindi nakatungtong sa lupa," he shared.

(I'm very proud of him because what he achieved was very difficult. He was up against big nations. Who would've thought that someone from a small country can beat them all? I'm very proud, it feels like I'm floating.)

Frisco said he would join those lining the streets of Manila on Wednesday to see his grandson and fellow Olympians during the heroes' parade at 3 p.m.

"Siguro mga one hour or two hours before, nandodoon na ako or kaming lahat. Kung saan mas malapit siguro doon nalang kami. Pero kung hindi naman mabilis yung motorcade, maaari kaming sumunod hanggang hindi kami pagod," he said.

(Maybe one or two hours before [the parade] I will be there, we will all be there. Wherever is nearer [to our house] then that's where we will watch. But if the motorcade is not so fast, we may follow it until we get tired.)

Yulo's grandfather said he could watch the parade from the starting point in Pasay City or stay close to their home in Malate, which is near the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.

"Dito na lang sa may Ospital ng Maynila kasi sa may Roxas Boulevard yun eh. Puwede din kami pumunta doon sa paguumpisahan dahil malapit lang naman dito walking distance," he said.

(We [may stay] near the Ospital ng Maynila since it's near Roxas Boulevard. We can also go to where the parade will start since it's near here, walking distance.)

"Bahala na bukas kasi alam ko maraming magsisisama. Lahat ng gusto sumama eh 'di isasama ko. Lahat yan mga kapitbahay namin sasama yan," Frisco added.

(I'll decide tomorrow where we will stay and who I will be with, but I know a lot of people will join me. Everyone who wants to come with me may do so. Most if not all of our neighbors would want to go.)

Frisco reminded his grandson to "remain a simple person" and always pray.

Yulo and his fellow Olympians will ride a float during the parade which will start at the Aliw Theater in Pasay City. The parade will pass through Roxas Boulevard, P. Burgos St., Finance Road, Taft Avenue, Quirino Avenue, and Adriatico St.

The parade will end at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, where Yulo used to train before heading to Japan, and a short program will be held there.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said there would be no road closures. Instead, it will implement a "stop-and-go" scheme at intersections in affected roads.

MMDA also advised motorists to take alternate routes to avoid heavy traffic.
