CEBU -- The family of the Boholana weight lifter Vanessa Sarno closed off a portion of the road junction in Barangay Bool, Tagbilaran City, Bohol, on Saturday morning so that they can watch her competition in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Unfortunately, Sarno exited early after three no-lifts in the snatch of the women's 71kg weight class. She was given a DNF (Did Not Finish) in her first-ever Olympics stint, as she no longer competed in the clean&jerk.

Sarno's mother explained that her daughter might have felt pain during her lifts in the competition due to an injury.

"Natalo siya at hindi na nakayanan kasi may injury talaga siya sa siko niya. Ang dami niyang pinagdaanan na injury. Isa yan sa dahilan," said her 50-year old mom, Emelita Sarno.

Despite this setback, her family still cheered her on. They also wore matching t-shirts with her name on it to show their support.

"Halo halong kaba talaga ang dibdib ko tska masaya sobrang kaba po talaga. Nak, wag kang mag-alala mahal na mahal ka namin kahit hindi ka nanalo. Mahal na mahal ka talaga namin. Tska i-wewelcome ka pa rin namin dito pag-uwi mo sa atin," added her mother.

For their part, the local government of Tagbilaran City vowed to continue supporting their homegrown athlete until the next Olympics.

"I'm looking forward to her next Olympic game. I'm sure nga taas pa siyag makab-ot (she will go far) this is only a setback moving forward," said Tagbilaran City Mayor Jane Yap.

Mayor Yap along with other city officials watched the game with the family as Sarno is their first ever female Olympian.

"We are very very proud. She's one of the youngest at 20 years old…So ayaw kawa og paglaom day ha? (Don't lose hope okay?)," added Yap.

A hero's welcome is slated for Sarno sometime next week as she returns to Tagbilaran City.

Yap also said that after Sarno's stint in the Olympics, they are seriously considering upgrading their facilities and equipment for sports.

"Dapat mopasar sa standard sa national and international competitions aron maanad sila. (It should pass national and international standards so they can get used to it)," Yap further said.

Sarno is the last Filipina weightlifter to compete from the Philippine delegation alongside Cebuanos John Ceniza and Elreen Ando.
