(UPDATED) Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Carlo Paalam opened his campaign in the 2024 Paris Olympics with a bang.

Paalam will move on to the quarterfinals of 57kg men's boxing after defeating Irish boxer Jude Gallagher via unanimous decision, with scores of 30-27, 29-28, 29-28, 29-28, 29-28 at North Paris Arena in France on Wednesday (Manila time).

Despite only earning the nod of three out of five judges in the first round — which was enough to win that frame — Paalam went on to dominate the next one for a perfect 5/5 outing from the scoring judges.

Paalam flexed his agility in the last round as he smartly dodged the Irish's attempts while landing jabs — enough to win three judges for a quick three-round bout and move on to the quarters.

It was a shutout for the Filipino boxing star in the round-of-16.

The Bukidnon pride will face either Vasile Usturoi of Belgium or Charlie Senior of Australia next, whoever rises from their round-of-16 match.

Earlier in the day, his compatriot Hergie Bacyadan absorbed a loss from Chinese Li Qian in women's boxing to end his Olympic journey.

Paalam is the third Filipino boxer to win in Paris, after Aira Villegas and fellow Tokyo Games silver medalist Nesthy Petecio.
