(UPDATED) Samantha Catantan fell short of advancing to the table of 16 in the women's individual foil competition of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The Filipina was dealt by Italy's Arianna Errigo with a 15-12 defeat during their Table of 32 faceoff on Sunday afternoon (Manila time) at the Grand Palais in Paris, France.

After trailing four-to-nothing, Catantan scored four straight points to tie the game with over a minute and 30 seconds remaining in the first frame.

Catantan's hit at the 1:20 mark eventually allowed her to overtake Italy's bet, 5-4, but Errigo quickly tied the game with 1:06 remaining.

Errigo regained a one-point lead at the end of the first round, and she banked on this momentum to recreate a four-point cushion, 9-5 with 2:22 remaining in the second round.

The Italian continued to impose her will as the second round progressed and even built an 11-6 lead, and while Catantan cut the lead to two, 14-12, with still 1:12 left in Round 3, as she looked to score an upset and advance to the Round 16, Errigo's experience proved to be too much as the 36-year-old veteran ended the game, 15-12.

Earlier, the Philippines' bet fought through an apparent knee injury and defeated Brazil's Mariana Pistoia to enter the Table of 32.

Catantan scored a 15-13 victory after she endured an early 7-4 deficit against Pistoia.

It was a historic feat for Catantan -- who at No. 266 is the lowest-ranked fencer in her division -- as she became the first Filipino fencer to win a direct elimination match in the Olympics.

Barcelona Olympian (1992) and now Philippine Sports Commissioner Walter Torres won one bout (and lost five) but it was in the Round of Pools, failing to qualify for the finals at 53rd spot out of 59 participants.

Catantan's coach, Rolando Canlas, had not been surprised at her victory over Pistoia, citing the Brazilian's lack of experience in major international competitions.

"Inaral namin ang laro ng Brazilian," he said, predicting "Malalampasan niya ito."

But her brave run ended against Errigo, who is ranked No. 2 in the world and was the gold medalist in the 2012 London Olympics.

Also exiting in the round-of-32 was Philippine-born fencer Maxine Esteban, who now represents the Ivory Coast.

Esteban, seeded 20th, absorbed a 15-7 loss to No. 13 seed Pauline Ranvier of France.
