(UPDATED) Filipina rower Joanie Delgaco got off to a strong start but ultimately ran out of steam in Heat 2 of the women's single sculls in the 2024 Paris Olympics, Saturday at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium.

Delgaco, the first Philippine athlete to compete in the 2024 Olympics, was in third place after the first 500 and 1000-meters, behind world champion Karolien Florijn of the Netherlands and Aurelia-Maxima Janzen of Switzerland.

But she was overtaken by Slovenia's Nina Kostanjsek after the 1500-meter mark, and the Filipina was unable to make up the difference.

Delgaco crossed the finish line with a time of 7:56.26, good for fourth place.

Only the top three rowers in each heat will advance to the quarterfinals outright, while the rest are relegated to the repechage.

Florijn topped the heat at 7:36.90, followed by Janzen (7:41.15) and Konstanjsek (7:46.30).

Delgaco will return to action tomorrow in the repechage, where she gets another chance to advance to the quarterfinals.

If Delgaco finishes in the top two of her repechage heat, she progresses to the quarterfinals and remains in contention for a medal.

"We have confidence in Joanie's ability to secure this positioning, but as always, implore her to stay focused, calm, and give her very best in any race no matter the competitor," Philippine Rowing Association President Patrick Gregorio said in a statement.
