MANILA – Capital1 might have gone down against Akari, but not without a fight.

And for the debuting Roma Mae Doromal, echoing coach Roger Gorayeb, the Solar Spikers performed better than expected despite an 18-25, 25-27, 25-22, 14-25 loss dealt by the Chargers on Thursday at PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

Capital1 fought back in Set 3, clinching the frame entirely, but eventually ran out of gas in the final canto.

"Same thoughts po kay coach Roger [Gorayeb] na nakakapanghinayang 'yung game. Kita niyo naman na very close din 'yung labanan. But, at the same time, happy din naman kasi at least nakita namin 'yung meron talagang progress and mas maganda 'yung na-perform namin sa expected," Doromal said after the game.

The libero out of Ateneo de Manila University registered 13 excellent digs, which somehow didn't get unnoticed by Gorayeb.

"'Yung depensa namin, malakas e. Maayos 'yung depensa namin. 'Yun lang opensa," Gorayeb said.

"Siyempre meron pa ring room for improvement. 'Yun 'yung pinaka-pinagfo-focusan namin ngayon. 'Yung may nakita kaming kailangan i-improve and pagtrabahuhan sa game," she went on.

Had they won the tightly contested Set 2, the match could have gone into a rubber frame, said Gorayeb.

"Nakakahinayang kasi okay na 'yung first set. Pero 'yung second kasi was very very close. Nauna pa kami sa last, eh. But we're not able to capitalize on it kaya nakakahinayang 'yung second set. Had we won the second set, eh 'di nagfi-fifth set kami ngayon," the renowned maestro said.

"Pero okay lang, maganda na 'yung team kumpara doon sa first conference namin."

For Gorayeb, this is Capital1's time to get better as they bank on the potential of their newcomers — Doromal, Leila Cruz, and Jenya Torres.

"Aangat na kami. Umangat na nga kaunti, di ba. Para sa akin, umangat na 'yan. Malaking tulong 'yang mga batang 'yan," he said.
