Filipino American PGA tour rookie Rico Hoey finally broke through for his first top-ten finish of his career as he had a strong finish on the final day of the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit.

Hoey carded 15 under par 273, just three strokes behind the winner, Cam Davis to finish tied for 6th place.

Hoey started the final day at 10 under par, still seven strokes off the leaders. But a solid five under par final round proved enough to break into the Top 10 for the first time in his young career.

On the front nine, Hoey had three birdies and a bogey. Then it was on the back nine where Hoey showed his poise and stormed up the leaderboard.

He birdied the 13th and 15th amidst a bogey on 14. But it was on the 17th hole where Hoey saved his most spectacular shot with a 38-foot putt to card an eagle and leapfrog into 6th place that he would hold on to after a par on the 18th.

This is the best finish of Hoey’s young career as the lone Filipino on the PGA tour, proudly carrying the Philippine flag.

He takes home $300,150, the biggest money haul of his career, and bumps up his season earnings to $516,136.
