MANILA – Filipina fencer Sam Catantan on Saturday held a fencing clinic under the Quezon City Sports Enhancement Program (QCSEP) to help teach and improve the skills of aspiring fencers in the country.

The 22-year-old, who recently booked a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics, is a product and mainstay of the QCSEP, a grassroot sports development program headed by 1st District Councilor Joseph Juico.

“Ang QC SEP fencing team po talaga malaki po ang naitulong sa akin ito po yung unang-unang program talaga na nag-open po ng doors of opportunities for me to be able po to compete in tournaments and to be able to get a scholarship in different UAAP schools dito po sa Manila,” she said.

"Nag-start po ako when I was 9 years old. I was very lucky po because at that time  nag ta-trabaho po yung lolo ko sa barangay po namin. And ang QCSEP fencing po kasi nag t-training po kami before sa iba’t ibang barangay halls po kung ano po yung available or sa mga basketball courts po ng iba’t ibang public schools po dito po," she added.

Catantan said conducting a fencing clinic is a humbling experience, knowing that she was also one of those kids eager to learn the sport.

“Syempre ganito lang din po ako dati. Ito po talaga ang isa sa mga dahilan kung bakit po nandito ako ngayon and kagaya ko lang din po sila noon,” she said.

“Ngayon po nakakatuwa na lumalaki at lumalaki po yung program at maraming bata na gustong i-try yung fencing and hopefully po in the future mas marami pa yung olympians na pwedeng manggaling di lang sa QCSEP fencing team pati na rin po sa iba't ibang mga clubs sa Philippines,” she added.

This also allows her to share the skills she learned from her coaches and teammates.

“Napakahalaga po sakin nun and blessing po na Im able po to help po yung mga batang kagaya ko,” she said.

Present at the event was Juico, who said that it is no surprise that Catantan was able to secure a seat in the 2024 Paris Olympics because of the burning passion she showed during training.

“Well hindi ko madescribe, undescribable yung pakiramdam na isang bata na nanggaling sa grassroot – nanggaling sa isang munting programa tapos biglang umasenso. Dahil sa pagsisikap nya, dahil sa pagmamahal nya sa sport, dahil sa dedication na binigay nya at because of this malayo ang naabot nya and we are mighty and so proud of what she has accomplished," he said.

“Talagang para sa kaniya ‘to,” he added.

During the event, San Miguel Corporation turned over a donation worth P500,000 to Catantan and Juico to support QCSEP’s future programs.
