A resilient Alas Pilipinas finally got its breakthrough in the AVC Challenge Cup for Men.

The national team entered the win column of the Bahrain-hosted tourney at the expense of a youthful Indonesian squad, 25-23, 23-25, 25-14, 25-22, on Wednesday night (Manila time) at the Isa Sport City Hall.

The Philippines dropped to the classification phase after absorbing defeats from China and the host country in Pool A action.

Alas leaned on the heroics of Marck Espejo, who put up a game-high 20 points built on 17 attacks, two aces, and one block.

After getting the opening salvo, Indonesia managed to level the playing field in Set 2, but gutsy efforts from the Espejo-captained squad prized them with two set wins to snatch the victory, with Jade Disquitado (12 points), Kim Malabunga (12 points), and Nico Almendras (10 points) also tallying double-digit scoring output.

They earned a slot in the ninth-place match and will face either neighbors Thailand or Chinese Taipei on June 7.
