MANILA (UPDATED) — National University is a win away from completing a four-peat in the UAAP men’s volleyball tournament.

This, after the Bulldogs defeated University of Santo Tomas, 25-17, 26-24, 25-19, during their Season 86 Finals Game 1 faceoff on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

Buds Buddin headed NU’s charge with 15 points, nine receptions, and two digs, Nico Almendras top scored with 16 markers, 19 receptions, and five digs, Leo Aringo had 15, while Owa Retamar tossed 24 of their team’s 15 excellent sets while also ending up with five markers.

Regardless of these dominant numbers, however, Bulldogs head coach Dante Alinsunurin wants the team to remain hungry as they go for their fourth-straight UAAP men’s volleyball title on Wednesday.

“Lagi ko nireremind na i-continue lang namin yung ginagawa namin mula nung simula kami nung nag start, na naka focus talaga kami sa goal namin na madomina namin yung volleyball dito sa UAAP,” he said after the game.

“Sa game kasi, yung game adjustments yung kailangan talaga namin. Ang problema namin kasi minsan, yung sarili namin kaya siguro, nagiging ‘di na maganda yung resulta. Pero sabi ko nga sa kanila, tyagain lang natin, isipin nila pa rin kung ano yung gusto natin talaga gawin dito sa UAAP,” he said.

After a convincing win by National U in the opening frame, both squads figured in a close encounter in the second as Josh Ybañez, Sherwin Umandal, Almendras, Aringo, and Buddin took charge for their respective squads.

Both teams were even tied at 24 apiece later in the set, but Buddin’s drop allowed the Bulldogs to get to set point.

Ybañez retaliated with a kill to tie the game, but his attack was deemed as an error after the ball hit the antenna, in turn, allowing NU to end the set.

The Bulldogs then went on to bank on this momentum to not only finish the contest in the third but also tally their first win over the Golden Spikers this season.

On the other hand, Ybañez led the Thomasians with 11 points, five receptions, and three digs, while following him were Umandal, Paul Colinares, and Gboy De Vega who put up nine, nine, and eight, respectively.

Alinsunurin’s squad will be looking to close out the series on Wednesday, May 15, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
