MANILA -- Filipino mixed martial arts star Joshua Pacio, who won the ONE Strawweight MMA World Championship just last March, will be out of action indefinitely due to a knee injury.

"The Passion" has confirmed that after recovering from a cervicomuscular strain he suffered after being inadvertently dropped on his neck by long-time rival Jarred Brooks in their March rematch at ONE: Qatar, he is dealing with an ACL tear in his right knee.

A report by local MMA expert Nissi Icasiano bared that the ACL tear was discovered through Pacio's latest MRI. However, the Filipino fighter already had the tear even before the rematch, held March 1 at the Lusail Sports Arena in Qatar.

Brooks was suspicious of the report, commenting "I better see something on that leg," on a Pacio-related social media post.

Pacio however confirmed the report.

"I fought you in Qatar with this injury," the "Passion" replied.

Pacio claimed the belt after Brooks was disqualified for illegally slamming the Filipino fighter on his head, barely a minute into the bout. Pacio was taken to a local medical facility after the fight.

Pacio is expected to undergo surgery next month to repair the tear. Recovery from an ACL injury generally takes eight months to over a year.

The injury rules out a trilogy bout between Pacio and Brooks this year. The American is unlikely to be inactive, however: he can focus on his dream match against reigning ONE Flyweight MMA World Champion Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson, someone he’s been calling out for years now.

There is also the possibility of a ONE Interim Strawweight MMA World Title match between Brooks and  #3-ranked contender Gustavo Balart, should the promotion make an interim belt.
