MANILA -- Fil-Am Nation Select-USA made sure that there will be a new champion in the 2024 Smart-NBTC National Finals.

This, after Fil-Am Nation clobbered National University-Nazareth School, 81-64, on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Terrence Hill starred with 21 points, six rebounds, five steals, and four assists, while Sebastian Margate turned in his strongest showing yet with 19 markers in the rematch of last year’s finals.

This time, the two teams met in the round-of-16, and the squad of Filipino-American cagers found their rhythm in the middle periods where they dominated the Bullpups, 49-32.

USA now advances to the quarterfinals – also known as Fantastic 8 – on Thursday still at the same venue to take on North Luzon champion Yengskivel Sportswear which downed Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan University-Sealcor, 78-70.

Batang Tiaong then cruised to the next round of the tournament behind John Rex Villanueva’s 25 points built on eight triples to shoot down PPG Tarlac, 80-64.

Meanwhile, UAAP champion Adamson High School triumphed in a tooth-and-nail tussle with University of the East, 65-57, thanks to Vince Reyes’ 14 markers laced with eight boards.

Also joining them in the Fantastic 8 is fellow UAAP playoff team University of Santo Tomas which saw Carl Manding continue to impress with 14 points and six rebounds in their 85-60 trouncing of Crossover Canada.

For their part, NCAA semifinalists Mapua High School and San Sebastian College-Recoletos took different paths, but still wound up in the same place: the quarterfinals.

The Staglets rode Jhun Peñaverde’s 38-point explosion, including the game-winning layup, to escape 1 San Rafael, 71-69, while the Red Robins leaned on Vince Mananquil’s 14-point, 11-rebound double-double to overwhelm FMLP/KMTE Customs Brokerage-Davao, 63-58.

Additionally, One Media TV48 Naga fended off Toyomoto Auto Supply-Davao’s late game heroics for a push-and-pull 68-59 decision. Christian Fernandez top-scored for the Bicolanos with 19 points on top of six boards while Jayvee Lavandero backstopped him with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

For the first time since 2017, there will be a new champion in Division 1, which was reigned over by NUNS for three National Finals in a row, including the pandemic years. Division 2 will crown new kings as well, which will be contested by five regional teams, two NCR sides, and a Global squad.

The Division 2 quarterfinals includes St. Jude College-Dasmariñas which eliminated Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu, 70-65; Eco Green Technology-Makati which ripped FilCom Italy, 94-65; Arellano High School which prevailed over Trinity-Negros Occidental, 83-68; and Philippine Christian University-Dasmariñas which scored a convincing 87-66 victory against Philippine College of Science and Technology-Calasiao.

Visayas champion Khalifa-Cebu is also set to keep playing in Division 2’s next round as they handed Triple Threat Basketball New Zealand a 25-point rout, 75-50, while regional neighbor St. Roberts International College-Iloilo defeated Fil-Euro Nation Select UK, 91-79.

Rounding out the Division 2 Fantastic 8 are Top Flight Sports Canada which escaped Homegrown Australia, 87-79, and UNBL-Don Bosco-Dumaguete which nipped Notre Dame of Midsayap, 73-67
