MANILA -- The University of Santo Tomas will try to stretch their perfect start to the UAAP Season 86 women's volleyball tournament on Wednesday, when they play the University of the Philippines at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Tigresses have won their first five assignments, including massive wins over last season's finalists in De La Salle University and National University.

First serve between UP and UST is at 2:00 p.m., to be followed by the showdown between the Ateneo Blue Eagles and the Adamson Lady Falcons.

In the men's division, skidding UST hopes to check a surprising three-match losing skid against last-place UP at 10 a.m. The Blue Eagles, coming off a stunning five-set reversal of the Golden Spikers that gave them solo fourth in the standings, tangle with the Falcons at 12 noon.

Behind prolific rookie Angge Poyos and the steadiness of libero-captain Detdet Pepito, UST has logged a perfect 5-0 record, its best start since opening its 2010-11 campaign with six straight wins.

Poyos is currently second to University of the East rookie Casiey Dongallo in scoring while leading the league in attack efficiency at 43.93%. She is third in serving and is also in the Top 10 in blocking. However, the rookie has consistently downplayed her own production to focus on their team goals.

"Yung mindset ko is maglaro lang at mag-contribute sa team. Iyon ang pinaka-importante. Hindi importante yung individual performance basta iniisip ko lang na mag-contribute, offense and defense," said Poyos.

Meanwhile, it has been a frustrating campaign so far for UP in Oliver Almadro's first season in charge, with the Fighting Maroons off to a 0-5 start. Middle blocker Niña Ytang has been a silver lining, as she leads the UAAP in blocking.

As it alternated losses and wins after five matches, Adamson is looking for a victory to remain within the top four range. The Lady Falcons, who hold a 2-3 record in fifth place, seek to rebound from a 13-25, 22-25, 17-25 defeat to the Lady Tamaraws last Saturday.

Ateneo, which has lost two in a row, sits in sixth place with a 1-4 card.
