MANILA, Philippines – Expected to be a contender for the top overall pick, Filipino-American guard Jason Brickman instead fell all the way down to the fourth round of the PBA D-League Rookie Draft, held Tuesday at the PBA Café.

The 6-foot Brickman last played for the Westports Malaysia Dragons in the ASEAN Basketball League, but looked to finally make his way to the PBA when he applied for the D-League draft. The 25-year-old playmaker out of Long Island University was, along with Jeron Teng of De La Salle University, expected to be among the first players taken.

Instead, Brickman wasn't selected until the fourth round, when Tanduay took him with the second pick.

Tanduay coach Lawrence Chongson was not exactly surprised to see Brickman fall.

"Kasi maraming natakot sa papeles niyan. Kung maayos 'yung papeles, siguro, sa hihingin niyang suweldo," said Chongson.

Chongson was referring to Brickman's Certificate of Identification, which the Fil-Am guard has yet to secure from the Bureau of Immigration. With no assurances that Brickman can get the necessary documentation, teams decided to pass up on the guard.

"Nagulat din ako kasi wala man lang sumugal," Chongson admitted. "I picked him at (the fourth round), so harmless naman.

Chongson knows that selecting Brickman comes with risks, but also noted that it may carry great rewards if the guard ends up completing his requirements.

"Parang Pasko, 'di ba? Parang nakakuha tayo ng Aguinaldo," said Chongson.

"Kung bukas makalawa, umabot ang papeles niyan, eh 'di ang pogi ko sa boss ko," he added.

Before selecting Brickman, Chongson took Jom Sollano from Colegio de San Juan de Letran, Monbert Arong from Far Eastern University, and Paul Varilla from University of the East in the first three rounds of the D-League Draft.
