MANILA -- President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday met with the Philippine surfing team, including Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Roger Casogay, who has been dubbed as a “hero surfer” for saving an Indonesian rival during a competition.
Casogay earned praise after helped Indonesian surfer Arip Nurhidayat to safety during a surfing competition event in the regional sports meet.

Earlier, Duterte’s long-time aide Senator Christopher “Bong” Go said the La Union-born surfer would receive the Order of Lapu-Lapu from the President on Dec. 18 in a Palace ceremony.
The Order of Lapu-Lapu is conferred to individuals who are recognized for their “invaluable service in relation to a campaign or advocacy of the President.”
Casogay was also chosen to be the Philippines' flag-bearer on Wednesday’s SEA Games closing ceremonies at the New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac.
