MANILA, Philippines—Marjon Piañar, fighting for the first time in the 30th Southeast Asian Games, could not maximize his height and length advantage against Thailand's Wuttichai Masuk in their welterweight gold-medal match.
Instead, Piañar settled for a silver medal after losing a clear unanimous decision to the Thai boxer.
Piañar initially used his long arms to keep Masuk at bay in the first round, but he faltered once hit by his powerful opponent.
After breaking Piañar's guard, Masuk controlled the bout, ducking away from the Filipino's attempts while landing key blows to the head.

Piañar had received a bye to the finals of the welterweight class.
He is the second Filipino boxer to earn a silver in the SEA Games after Irish Magno.
