MANILA, Philippines -- Carlo Paalam delivered the Philippines' first boxing gold medal in the 30th Southeast Asian Games after defeating Indonesia's Kornelis Kwangu Langu in men's light flyweight, Monday at the PICC Forum.

Paalam proved to be the quicker, more aggressive fighter, landing crucial shots while also evading the Indonesian fighter's counters. He won via unanimous decision.

"Sobrang saya siyempre, nadaya ako dati sa Malaysia, so salamat sa Panginoon talaga kasi binigay niya ang best ko sa taas ng ring," said Paalam after the game.

It completed a redemption story for Paalam, who was the lone Filipino boxer not to bring home a medal from the 2017 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur.

Moreover, it allowed him to earn a measure of revenge for teammate Rogen Ladon, who had lost to the Indonesian boxer in a previous tournament.

"Magaling din talaga, experienced na. Nakalaban na siya ni (Rogen) Ladon, nakatalo kay Ladon," Paalam explained. "Sobrang saya, nanalo ako at naibawi ko si Kuya Ladon."
